General
What is ShuHop?+
ShuHop is a regional ride-sharing platform designed specifically for the Shuswap region of British Columbia. It connects drivers and passengers for trips between communities such as Salmon Arm, Sicamous, Blind Bay, Sorrento, Enderby, Vernon, Kelowna, Kamloops, and beyond. ShuHop is built to make transportation easier in smaller communities where taxis can be limited, distances between towns are longer, and people often need something more flexible than a traditional city-focused ride app.
How does ShuHop work?+
ShuHop offers three ways to travel. Hop Now is for immediate ride requests, similar to a traditional ride-hailing service. Hop Later is for scheduled rides such as airport runs, appointments, work trips, or planned events. Hop Share allows drivers to post trips they are already planning between towns and offer seats to passengers heading the same direction. The goal is to give the region a more practical transportation network that works for real Shuswap travel patterns.
What areas will ShuHop serve?+
ShuHop will initially focus on the Shuswap region, including communities such as Salmon Arm, Sicamous, Blind Bay, Sorrento, and Enderby. Common extended routes may include Vernon, Kelowna, Kamloops, and Revelstoke depending on demand and driver availability. Over time, expansion will be based on where people are actively requesting rides and where a strong enough driver network exists to support reliable service.
When will ShuHop launch?+
ShuHop is currently preparing for launch across the Shuswap region. Launch will take place once key requirements are in place, including licensing, insurance setup, driver onboarding, and final platform readiness. The goal is not to launch half-ready, but to launch with a strong enough driver base and a proper operational setup so the platform feels real and useful from day one.
How ShuHop Is Different
How is ShuHop different from Uber or other ride apps?+
Most ride-sharing platforms are designed for large cities with dense populations. ShuHop is designed specifically for regional communities and smaller towns. That means it is built around longer distances between communities, airport rides, tourism traffic, flexible driver availability, and regional shared travel between towns. ShuHop is also designed to keep commissions far lower than major ride apps so local drivers keep more of what they earn. Instead of copying a big-city model and dropping it into a small town, ShuHop is being designed around how people in the Shuswap actually move around.
Is ShuHop a community-driven platform?+
Yes. ShuHop was created with the idea that transportation platforms should benefit the communities they operate in, not just the company behind them. The goal is to make sure locals have a way to earn extra income while keeping most of what they earn, while passengers still get access to affordable and practical transportation. Many large ride apps take significant commissions from every ride, which means both drivers and passengers often end up paying more while drivers keep less. ShuHop is designed differently. By keeping commissions low and focusing on regional travel, ShuHop is built to serve the Shuswap community first.
Why keep commissions lower than other ride apps?+
Many large ride-sharing platforms take a significant cut from every ride, which can leave both drivers and passengers squeezed. ShuHop keeps commissions intentionally low so drivers can keep the majority of each fare and so the platform remains more sustainable for the people actually using it. The point is not to squeeze every possible dollar out of drivers and passengers. The point is to build something strong enough to operate properly while still being fair to the people who make the platform work.
How does ShuHop compare to other ride apps for drivers?+
Many ride apps take roughly 20% to 35% of each ride. ShuHop commissions are designed to be significantly lower. Founding drivers receive 2% lifetime commission, early drivers receive 5%, and standard drivers are expected to fall around 10% to 15%. That means drivers keep far more of what they earn compared to most major ride platforms. For a regional platform like ShuHop, this matters because drivers need the economics to make sense in smaller communities where trip volume is lower than in major cities.
Pricing
How much do rides cost?+
For most in-town rides, ShuHop uses a simple pricing structure built to be fair to both drivers and passengers. Typical pricing may include a $3.50 base fare, approximately $1.20 per kilometre, and a $2 booking fee. Exact pricing may vary depending on trip type, distance, and future platform updates, but the overall goal is to keep rides predictable for passengers while making sure drivers are properly compensated for fuel, wear and tear, and their time.
Why not tie pricing directly to gas prices?+
ShuHop is not intended to constantly change rates every time fuel moves up or down. That would make pricing confusing for passengers and harder to trust. Instead, pricing is designed to already account for fuel, maintenance, depreciation, and driver profit in a way that makes sense for the region. Rates can be reviewed and adjusted when needed, but the platform should feel simple and understandable rather than unpredictable every time gas prices change.
What is the $2 booking fee?+
Each ride includes a $2 booking fee to help support the platform. This helps cover payment processing, infrastructure, insurance-related costs, and ongoing development and maintenance. Charging a small booking fee allows ShuHop to keep driver commissions much lower than most major ride apps. In other words, the booking fee helps support the platform without taking a large cut out of every driver’s fare.
How does pricing work for shared inter-town trips?+
For longer regional rides, drivers may post a trip they are already planning and offer seats at a set price. For example, a driver going from Salmon Arm to Kelowna could post three available seats for $25 per seat and passengers could reserve one. This makes longer rides more affordable for passengers while helping drivers earn more from one trip. Shared inter-town rides are one of the biggest ways ShuHop differs from city-focused platforms and one of the features that makes it especially practical for the Shuswap.
Why use a base fare at all?+
A base fare helps make sure short trips are still worth taking for drivers. Without a base fare, very short rides may not cover the time, fuel, and effort involved in getting to a pickup and completing the trip. The base fare helps create a fair minimum structure so drivers are not expected to take unreasonably low-paying trips, while still keeping pricing understandable for passengers.
Is there a minimum fare?+
Yes. ShuHop has a $10 minimum fare to ensure drivers are fairly compensated for short trips. Rides are normally calculated using a $3.50 base fare, approximately $1.20–$1.40 per kilometre depending on fuel conditions, and a $2 booking fee. If the calculated fare is below $10, the minimum fare applies.
Drivers
What is a Founding Driver?+
The first 25 drivers accepted into ShuHop become Founding Drivers. Founding Drivers receive a 2% lifetime commission, a Founding Driver badge, priority placement on the platform, and early access to future features. It is ShuHop’s way of rewarding the drivers who help build the network from the beginning. Early drivers are taking a chance on a new platform, so the founding driver structure is meant to give them a meaningful long-term benefit for helping make launch possible.
How much can drivers earn?+
Drivers keep the majority of each fare. Because ShuHop is designed with lower commission rates than most large ride-sharing apps, more of the ride stays with the driver. Drivers may also earn more by offering shared seats on longer trips between towns. The overall goal is to make ShuHop worthwhile for local drivers, not to create a situation where drivers are doing all the work while the platform takes an oversized share.
Will there actually be riders?+
Building rider demand is one of the main priorities before launch. ShuHop is focused on growing awareness across the Shuswap through community outreach, early passenger sign-ups, local promotion, and founding driver momentum. Transportation demand already exists in the region. ShuHop’s job is to make it easier to connect drivers with the people who already need rides. In smaller communities, once a platform starts feeling active and useful, the network effect can grow quickly.
Can I drive part-time?+
Yes. ShuHop is designed to be flexible. Drivers can choose when they want to drive, whether that means evenings, weekends, airport runs, event transportation, or simply posting trips they are already taking between communities. Some drivers may only want to drive a few hours here and there. Others may want to regularly offer regional trips. ShuHop is meant to work for both.
Do I have to accept every ride request?+
No. Drivers are free to choose which rides they accept. You can accept rides that fit your schedule and decline ones that do not. The platform is meant to give drivers flexibility rather than forcing them into a rigid system where every request has to be taken regardless of whether it makes sense.
What if there are no ride requests nearby?+
Drivers can use Hop Share to post trips they are already planning and offer available seats. This makes the platform useful even when immediate requests are limited and allows drivers to earn from travel they were already going to do. For example, if someone is already heading from Salmon Arm to Kamloops, they can offer seats in advance instead of depending entirely on instant local ride requests. That makes a lot of sense in a regional market like the Shuswap.
Do I have to pay for my driver record or criminal background check?+
No. ShuHop plans to partner with a professional screening provider to handle driver background checks and driving record verification as part of the onboarding process. The goal is to make it as easy as possible for qualified drivers to join without needing to arrange and pay for these checks themselves. Additional details about the screening process will be provided during onboarding, but the intent is to reduce upfront friction for drivers rather than putting extra costs in their way.
Is a Class 4 license required to drive on ShuHop?+
A Class 4 license is required for both Hop Now and Hop Later rides, as they operate as ridehail services. Hop Share rides, which are scheduled shared trips between towns, do not require a Class 4 license. To make it easier to get started, ShuHop covers the cost of obtaining a Class 4 license for founding drivers through the Driver Launch Bonus. Drivers can earn up to $150 by completing their first 30 rides, with payouts starting after just 5 rides. This is designed to remove the biggest barrier to driving and help more local people get on the road quickly.
What is the Driver Launch Bonus?+
The Driver Launch Bonus is ShuHop’s way of helping new drivers get started. For the first 25 founding drivers, ShuHop will cover the cost of getting a Class 4 license and pay an additional bonus as they begin driving. Drivers can earn up to $150 total, with payouts at 5, 15, and 30 rides. This allows drivers to recover the cost of their license quickly while also earning extra income right away. The goal is to make becoming a driver as low-friction as possible and ensure a strong local driver network at launch.
Insurance & Safety
Is ShuHop insured?+
Yes. ShuHop plans to provide blanket commercial insurance coverage for rides arranged through the platform. This coverage is intended to apply while a driver is actively using ShuHop for a trip, including after accepting a ride, while travelling to a pickup, and during the trip itself. The goal is to ensure that rides arranged through the platform are properly covered and that ShuHop is being built with safety and compliance in mind.
Do drivers still need their own insurance?+
Yes. Drivers are still required to hold their own valid personal vehicle insurance as required by law. ShuHop’s blanket insurance is designed to supplement a driver’s existing coverage during platform-related trips, not replace the driver’s own valid insurance policy. Drivers must still maintain valid insurance, a legally registered vehicle, and a valid driver’s licence. This layered approach is standard and helps protect both drivers and passengers.
Why are both personal insurance and ShuHop coverage needed?+
A driver’s personal insurance covers normal personal vehicle use, while ShuHop’s blanket coverage is intended to provide additional protection during rides arranged through the platform. Keeping both in place helps create a safer and more compliant structure rather than relying on one policy to do everything. It also makes it clear that drivers still have personal legal responsibilities as vehicle owners and drivers.
What safety requirements are there for drivers?+
To help maintain a safe platform, drivers may be required to complete criminal background checks, driving record checks, and vehicle safety-related requirements as part of onboarding and compliance. These checks help ensure a safe experience for everyone using ShuHop and are part of building a legitimate, trustworthy transportation platform rather than just putting up a website and hoping for the best.
Can ShuHop help reduce drinking and driving?+
That is one of the major goals. In many smaller communities, transportation options late at night can be limited. By helping create a reliable network of local drivers, ShuHop aims to give people a safer option to get home when they should not be driving. That benefits individuals, families, local businesses, and the broader community. In a region like the Shuswap, this is not just a transportation issue. It is also a community safety issue.
Licensing & Compliance
Is ShuHop legal?+
Yes. ShuHop is being developed to operate under British Columbia’s Transportation Network Services framework. The goal is to launch as a fully compliant transportation platform, not as a workaround or grey-area service.
Is the TNS application already in progress?+
Yes. ShuHop’s application for a Transportation Network Services licence is under way. Launch will take place only once the necessary licensing, insurance, and operational requirements are in place. This includes the regulatory steps needed to operate properly, along with safety and compliance expectations that come with running a transportation platform in British Columbia.
Why mention licensing before launch?+
Because trust matters. Riders and drivers both want to know that ShuHop is being built the right way. Being transparent about licensing, insurance, and compliance shows that the platform is serious about becoming a real and properly structured service rather than something thrown together without regard for legal and operational requirements.
Support ShuHop
How will ShuHop support the local community?+
It is designed to be more than just a transportation service. The goal is to keep as much value as possible within the Shuswap while also supporting the communities that make the region special. As ShuHop grows, the plan is to actively support local events, businesses, and community initiatives through sponsorships and partnerships. This could include supporting local festivals, helping promote small businesses, and working with organizations that benefit the region. At the same time, ShuHop aims to put more money directly into the pockets of local drivers while improving transportation access across the region. Instead of profits being pulled out of the region by a large tech company, ShuHop is built to keep more of that economic activity circulating locally. By supporting local drivers, partnering with local businesses, and contributing to community events, ShuHop hopes to become a service that the Shuswap community truly feels ownership of.
Why join or support ShuHop early?+
Early riders and early drivers are what make a small-town platform actually work. The more people who join before launch, the stronger ShuHop will feel from day one. Early support helps build route demand, driver availability, and community awareness all at once. In a regional platform, that early momentum matters a lot more than it does in a major city where demand is already dense.
How can I support ShuHop?+
You can support ShuHop by joining the passenger waitlist, applying to become a driver, sharing the platform with friends, and helping spread the word across the Shuswap. Every early user helps build the network that makes ShuHop possible. In smaller communities, word of mouth and local support are a huge part of how something like this becomes real.
Community mission
Built for the Shuswap community.
ShuHop was created to improve transportation across the region while making sure local drivers have a fair way to earn extra money and keep most of the value from each ride. By keeping commissions lower, supporting flexible ride types, and focusing on the needs of smaller communities, ShuHop aims to build a transportation network that works for the people actually using it.
